In preparation for our Student Vote on Monday for the Alberta provincial election (as part of our Social Studies work around democracy and provincial government), students have been exploring various resources in order to familiarize themselves with the parties and candidates who are running in this election. Students have asked for some of these resources to be shared on the blog in order to allow for further exploration at home. (These could also be helpful for parents who are looking for more information before they vote!) Here are some helpful links:

We had a fantastic four days being active and learning new skills at Winsport! We were amazed at how everyone's skiing and snowboarding improved over the course of the lessons, and were so impressed with the courage, determination, and perseverance that our students showed! I'm so proud of all of you! We also took some time this week to finish up reading The Giver, to start into the actual game creation in Coding Quest, and to consider favourite quotes and good memories for Memory Book. It's been a busy but great week! Thank-you so much to all of the parent volunteers who made our Winsport days possible! Important Dates:

*A note from Mrs. Smith* Please encourage your child to practice their recorder. Our short classes do not allow sufficient time for practicing of new skills that are taught. As little as five minutes a day can have a very positive impact on student progress! As we continue to work on recorder, students who are practicing are coming prepared to learn new skills and students who don't are becoming frustrated when they aren't able to keep up. The only way to remember note names, notes on the staff, and fingering positions, is through repeated exposure during practice. The recorder can be a beautiful and rewarding instrument to play if sufficient time is given to practicing! Thank you for your support! Any questions? Contact me at [email protected] Science Fair Reminder The school science fair is all day on Tuesday, January 29 (which is tomorrow!). In order to participate, students must have their trifold, logbook, and any other project elements in the Hawksnest during flex entry time the day of the fair. Trifolds are not permitted on the school buses, so bus students will need to make other arrangements to get their trifolds to school on January 29th and home on January 31st. Participating students will be out of class for the majority of the day, presenting their projects in the Hawksnest, but will still get the regular recess and lunch breaks. If any participants are unable to behave appropriately during the fair, they will be asked to return to their classroom and be disqualified from moving on to the city science fair. Parents are invited and encouraged to stop by the science fair to see the projects during the day as well. If you or your child have any questions about the science fair, please don't hesitate to ask! The city science fair website has lots of great tips for creating an effective trifold and crafting a strong oral presentation too, so students are encouraged to read through that site once again. Outdoor School We had an amazing outdoor school experience at Camp Chief Hector! Students and teachers had many wonderful opportunities to explore the outdoors, challenge themselves, and get to know and work with each other in a new context, all while extending our classroom learning and getting hands on experiences tied to our grade 6 program of studies. Students hiked, learned about trees and forests and sky science, participated in predators and prey as an herbivore or carnivore, participated in their own economy while creating infrastructure for their community in the ECOnomy game, and played and worked together on the challenge course, natural playground, and through drama games and activities. We will continue reflecting on and referring back to this valuable experience in the coming weeks at school. Upcoming Due Date:
