In preparation for our Student Vote on Monday April 15 for the Alberta provincial election (as part of our Social Studies work around democracy and provincial government), students have been exploring various resources in order to familiarize themselves with the parties and candidates who are running in this election. Students have asked for some of these resources to be shared on the blog in order to allow for further exploration at home. (These could also be helpful for parents who are looking for more information before they vote!) Here are some helpful links:

Summary of Learning September 24-28
Last Week of SeptemberThank you to those of you who were able to come by for Meet The Teacher Night last Thursday evening. It was great to reconnect and to meet the new families in our classroom.
I wanted to highlight our Social Studies role play activities that students and teachers will be participating in this week. On Tuesday September 25th, students will be introduced to various types of government including Monarchy, Oligarchy, Dictatorship and Anarchy. On Wednesday September 26th, we will introduce the process of decision making through consensus, direct democracy and representative democracy. Throughout the role play, we will reflect and debrief on the experience. Please remember to take time to read through the Outdoor School information package and return the Acknowledgement of Risk forms as soon as possible. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you. Friday September 28th is the Muffin Breakfast and the Terry Fox Run. Come out and join us to help complete Terry's run. The muffin breakfast starts at 8:00am and the run will begin at 10am in the gym with an assembly. Meet The Teacher Night & Outdoor SchoolWednesday, September 19, 2018
A reminder that tomorrow is Meet the Teacher night! (With a delicious FREE Back to School BBQ on the school compound starting at 5:30.) I will be speaking at 6:30 and at 7:00, with two identical presentations that highlight important information for the year, including information about outdoor school. It is important to note that, unlike other years, there will not be an additional parent information night about outdoor school, so all parents are strongly encouraged to attend tomorrow evening. Outdoor school information packages will also be handed out at Meet the Teacher night. Please let me know if you are unable to attend so that outdoor school information may be communicated to you via other means. Forms and NoticesPlease be reminded to return the School Fees notice (green) and the Start of the Year information package (multi-colored), as they are are due asap.
This week we also sent home a Fun Lunch notice, a Welcome Back Muffin Breakfast notice and a walking Field Trip notice. Please speak to your child if you have not seen these. Week 2: September 10-14This week our blog was written by two students and Ms. Fitzpatrick. Please read below to learn how students were engaged in learning.
Hello Parents/Guardians, During the last two weeks, students have been doing a lot of work. They’ve done Science, Math, Art, Gym, LA, Social Studies and Music. In Science, students are learning about Trees and Forests. This week they learned that trees can communicate through their root systems. In Math, the students played a number game where we put a number on a piece of tape on our backs and we would ask questions to figure out our numbers. In Art, the students were doing a visual journal page on grade six about things they’re looking forward to and that they hope to do. Students have also been keeping active in gym, playing doctor dodge ball and various tag games. Mr. Janzic also took time to review gym expectations and student rights and responsibilities. In Language Arts students have been writing stories they are familiar with, but with the added twist of adding monsters. Also, our novel, The Rule of Three, by Eric Walters is an exciting exploration of what could happen if all of the computers suddenly stopped working. Social Studies this week was an introduction to various types of government and their decision making process. In groups students have to plan and design a playground following specific roles related to a type of government system. Finally, Music was interactive and fun as students played various games related to rhythm and memory. Thank you for reading about our week. Sincerely, 6DF First Early Dismissal: Friday-September 7, 2018Just a reminder that Friday September 7th is our first early dismissal. Students will be dismissed at 1:20. Please remember that this is our dismissal time every Friday throughout the year.
Welcome To Grade 6!Week of: September 4-8, 2018
Can you believe we are back at school already? I hope you've had a wonderful summer and are excited for a fun and challenging year ahead. As we begin our year together I want us all to be thinking about what 'community' means to each of us. What is community? Where is community? How do we contribute to and receive from community? What communities are we a part of? I'm looking forward to hearing how your summer breaks went and what you are looking forward to in the coming year. Welcome back and let's have a great first week of Grade 6. |
