Over the past week, Grade 6 has been researching the roles of individuals in Iroquois society. They learned about the responsibility that Clan Mothers had in choosing leaders and ensuring all individuals had a voice. Next week we will look further into how decisions were made within their society and try to use consensus to solve several problems within our own classroom. In Language Arts, we've been looking at different figures of speech, such as synecdoche and personification. The students came up with their own examples of each and will be demonstrating their understanding with a literal illustration of personification. The class is continuing to learn about flight and how planes navigate the skies. Next week they will look at how birds fly. Our recent Art project merged the concepts of flight and texture as students created hot air balloons featuring a variety of textures. This week in Math, students worked on a project to wrap up the measurement unit. They used their knowledge of angles as well as types of triangles and polygons to design an amusement park. Some very creative ideas and designs came out of this project. Next, students will be learning about the first quadrant of the Cartesian plane and how to perform transformations within it. They will also use shapes to perform translations, rotations and reflections.
On Thursday, students had the opportunity to listen to author Marty Chan. He explained how ideas for stories can come from many sources like personal experience and imagination. The children really enjoyed hearing several stories that inspired his books and watching him perform multiple magic tricks.

As an introduction to the Iroquois Confederacy, we read the book Hiawatha and the Peacemaker and discussed its meaning. Students also looked at a variety of wampum belts and discovered their significance for the Haudenosaunee people. The class is currently working on creating their own wampum belt which will tell their personal story. In Math, we continued to explore angles in triangle and discovered that interior angles add up to 180 degrees. Students used this information to determine the missing angle in triangles. They also learned that triangles can be classified by sides (scalene, equilateral and isosceles) and constructed triangles using given angles or sides. Through a variety of experiments, students continued to learn about the properties of air. We began looking at Bernoulli's principle and will continue to examine the concept of lift and how it is used in flight. On Wednesday students wrote the ELA PAT. If anyone is interested in practicing for the rest of the PAT's coming up in June, go to the Resources page on the blog. In Language Arts next week, we will continue to look at figures of speech as well as write some poetry. Last week students came up with an inquiry topic for their Genius Hour project. Below are a few of their ideas. While some time will be given in class to work on this, students will need to work on it at home too. Project are due May 31.
April 26th
Students began learning about angles in Math this week. They practiced showing right, acute, obtuse, reflex and straight angles using 2 arrows attached with a fastener. The kids also explored the school searching for angles in real life. Next week we will begin measuring angles using a protractor. In Language Arts, we began a unit on poetry. The students wrote metaphors and brainstormed descriptive words to create a shape poem. Shape poetry describes a particular topic and is written in the shape of that object. In preparation for the upcoming writing PAT, the class will practice writing a story using a picture prompt next week. The class examined a variety of Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) artifacts to make inferences about what it was, who used it and what it teaches them about the owner. Next week we will look more at daily life. In Science, the class has been engaging in a variety of experiments to determine the properties of air. The students have learned that air has mass, takes up space and exerts pressure. Next week we will learn about how air is fluid and can be compressed. Today we had a guest speaker come in to talk to the class about his job as an air traffic controller. The class really enjoyed watching the videos about air traffic control and listening to the explanation of how planes take off.

Next week the students will begin writing a myth which explains something in nature or teaches a lesson. They are also looking at how the cities were set up in order to determine if Ancient Greece was an equitable society. In Math, we started learning how to identify improper (5/2) and mixed fractions (3 1/2). The students practiced what they learned by playing a card game which required them to find the equivalent fraction. Next week we will look at how to convert improper fractions to mixed fractions and vice versa. On Thursday, we participated in Winter Walk Day. It was established to encourage Albertans to get outside in winter. Our class went on a walk over to the community gardens and explored the area. The kids had a blast! In French, the students are learning vocabulary to do with sports and we will look at making sentences with the verbs “jouer” and “faire” next week. The Starry Night pieces in the style of Van Gogh are looking beautiful. Many of the students are putting their own creative spin on this masterpiece.
If your child is participating in the Science Fair on Tuesday (January 29) please remind them to bring in their logs, trifold and any other necessary material by this date. Parents are welcome and encouraged to stop by.
A note from Mrs. Smith, the Music teacher:
Please encourage your child to practice their recorder. Our short classes do not allow sufficient time for practicing of new skills that are taught. As little as five minutes a day can have a very positive impact on student progress! As we continue to work on recorder, students who are practicing are coming prepared to learn new skills and students who don't are becoming frustrated when they aren't able to keep up. The only way to remember note names, notes on the staff, and fingering positions, is through repeated exposure during practice. The recorder can be a beautiful and rewarding instrument to play if sufficient time is given to practicing! Thank you for your support! Any questions? Contact me at [email protected]
